CRA audits and letters: frequently asked questions
What happens if the CRA sends me a review letter?
A review letter usually asks you to send receipts or documents that support a claim on your return, such as medical expenses, childcare or moving costs. It isn't an accusation. Respond by the deadline in the letter with organized documents; if you don't, the CRA may reduce or deny the claim.
Is a CRA review the same as an audit?
No. A review usually checks one or two items on a return and asks for supporting documents. An audit is a broader examination of your records, more common for businesses and self-employed people. We can help with both.
What if I disagree with a reassessment?
You can file a notice of objection. For most individuals, the deadline is the later of 90 days after the date on the notice of reassessment or one year after the filing deadline for that tax year.
Can you talk to the CRA for me?
Yes. Once you authorize us as your representative, we can speak with the CRA about your file and respond on your behalf.
