Personal tax returns: frequently asked questions
What documents do I need for my personal tax return?
Bring your tax slips (T4, T4A, T5, T3 and others), RRSP contribution receipts, donation, medical, childcare and tuition receipts, last year's notice of assessment, and records of any rental or self-employment income and expenses.
What happens if I file my tax return late?
If you owe tax and file late, the CRA charges a late-filing penalty of 5% of the balance owing, plus 1% for each full month the return is late, up to 12 months. Interest also applies to unpaid balances from May 1. If you can't pay in full, filing on time still avoids the penalty.
Should I file even if I had no income?
Usually yes. Filing a return is how you receive benefits and credits such as the GST/HST credit and the Canada Child Benefit, and it keeps your RRSP room up to date.
What happens after my return is filed?
The CRA reviews it and sends a notice of assessment confirming your refund or balance owing. We can explain the notice and help if the CRA asks for more information later.
